It's a fascinating, beautifully illustrated account of growing up behind the iron curtain in Czechoslovakia, based on the memories, diaries and artwork of the author. I found it thought-provoking and captivating and it made me Google the word "Spartakiad".
rad this on your recommendation and I have to conclude it is written for adults and not children. Not only that for adults old enough to remember the names of the 'scary bad communists'. I don't think my kids learned that in school and they are mid-twenties now. The book seemed too unemotional. Cute pictures but despite the first person, very impersonal. Maybe the writer had an ambivalent feeling about his life behind the wall. He did not create a strong emotion for me as the reader.
